Enoch Hoag, a member of Iowa Yearly Meeting, was appointed Superintendent of the Central Superintendency (Kansas and Indian Territory) in 1869 under President Grant's "Peace Policy." This gave supervision of the Indians in this area to the Orthodox branch of the Society of Friends.
